The 2001 Lowell Damon Woods Annual Picnic and Pig Roast
Rock Climbing at Devil's Lake a Hit!
|

|
|

As a fellow board member pointed out to me the other day, our
neighborhood association is in very good shape. We have 223 members,
our highest level yet, we are well-funded, and we had a tremendous
summer picnic (nearly 150 attended!). Many thanks go to the board
members and the many volunteers that make everything happen. I
especially want to thank Richard Stollberg for his overall
leadership in organizing the picnic, which was a huge success. If
you see him, give him a big pat on the back.
Of course, the real reason we have the summer picnic is to hold
our annual meeting and elect the board of directors. Although the
picnic was the clear preference of many (and with good reason), we
did manage to fulfill our obligation and install a new board. I'm
pleased to announce that first-time board members Karen McNeely,
Lynn Pawelski, and Mary Gwinn will join returning board members
Laura Buege, Bill Duyser, Larry Kopperud, JoAnne Marks, Sophie
Prange, Richard Stollberg, Dean Teofilo, and me on the 2001/2002
Lowell Damon Woods board. I also want to thank Margaret Long for her
service on the board last year. Margaret was instrumental in keeping
us up-to-date on the many issues that affect seniors in our area. We
have yet to find a replacement for Margaret, so if you feel the need
to temper our youthful enthusiasm with a little wisdom, please give
me a call.
When the new board meets in September, we begin the process of
making plans for the next year. This includes setting goals,
deciding on a calendar of events, and creating a budget. While we
have several popular activities that occur every year, we like to
try new activities, also. One example from last spring was the rock
climbing outing. If you have ideas for activities that you want us
to organize, or help you organize, please let us know. That's what
we're here for!

NEW GARDEN PATH AT DAMON HOUSE
Thanks to the labors of volunteers from Boy Scout Troop
21, the Lowell Damon House Museum has a new garden path.
Construction of the crushed-stone path was an Eagle Scout service
project planned by Paul Vogel of Pleasant Street and carried out by
about 20 scouts and adult scout leaders.
The project, completed in early July, follows a design prepared
for the owner of the museum, the Milwaukee County Historical
Society. The 150-foot path helps define the outline of the woodland
gardens in the back yard. Restoring and improving the grounds of the
museum is part of an effort aimed at attracting more visitors to the
museum. The Wauwatosa Beautification Committee, the Heritage Garden
Club and the Damon Woods Neighborhood Association are funding garden
materials at the museum this year, including the garden path.
Volunteers included George DeJarlais and his sons, Jim and Joe;
Dan and Kevin Lofy; Randy Schoen and David Wehnes; and Dan Causier.
Five years ago, Scouts from Troop 21 volunteered for an Eagle
project in which they painted the exterior of the museum. Troop 21
is the largest Boy Scout troop in Milwaukee County and is sponsored
by Wauwatosa Avenue Methodist Church.

The
2001 Lowell Damon Woods Annual Picnic and Pig Roast June 14th
--Another great annual meeting and picnic! The weather was
perfect, and we had near record attendance.
We led off with the Children's Carnival, organized by Sophie
Prange and Kathy Mannebach and their troupe of helpers -- Kaitlin
Dooley, Ross Hartwick, Carly Krajcik, Chelsea Mannebach, Elise
Mannebach, and Laura Wehnes. Lots of great photo ops -- especially
the pie eating. We all got to meet some new neighbors -- Dan, Amy
and Alexis Giampetroni.
Then it was on to the food! Many thanks to Dean and Michelle
Teofilo for all their work organizing the pig roasting again this
year, and to those who helped cook during the day -- Charlie Causier,
Phil Kroner, Richard Marks, Jack MacKenzie, and Jim Buege. Thanks to
Jeff Enders for more prize-winning home brew, and to Larry and Eric
Kopperud for the sweet corn. And thanks to all who brought such
delicious food.
The music and dancing kicked off, literally and figuratively, at
7:00 with Ethnitricity, and their international, infectious, and
gotta-dance-to-it music. (Thanks, Sophie, for the suggestion.)
Thanks are due to the many people who helped make this another
success:
Setup and cleanup: Ellie Bjorkman and Jeff Enders, Bret
Rockenbach and Diane Kaiser-Rockenbach, Julie Brown, Julie
Gunderson, Jeanine and Tom Schoen, and many others. Registration:
Claudia Shea, Jeanine Schoen and Ellie Bjorkman. Shopping: Jeanine
Schoen. Tables: Bill Duyser and St. Matthew's Church. Announcement
preparation and distribution: JoAnne Marks, Laura Buege, Sophie
Prange, Nancy Frisone, Carrie MacKenzie, Diane Olenchek, Kathy
Kopperud, Mary Lorch, Dave Vogel, Phil Kroner, Judy Olson. Servers:

Stollberg for renting the port-a-potty.
Thanks, as always, to the Milwaukee County Historical Society and
Art Steadman for use of the grounds.

Stride Rite sandals complete with white socks; one serving spoon;
one large spoon; one knife; one 12" square white plastic

Rock Climbing at
Devil's Lake a Hit! |
|
On June 16th, the neighborhood rock
climbers met at the crack of dawn to drive out to Devil's Lake State
Park to start their day long adventure rock climbing.
The climbers — Ray and Jennifer Farrell, Stephen Van Dorn, Larry
and Erik Kopperud, Chelsea Mannebach, (pictured right) a couple of
Stephen's rock climbing friends and Margot Geisthardt, met up with
Dan Kopperud at the park's east bluff. ( Dan is attending UWM and
lives in Madison). |
 |
|
They climbed many rock formations like,
"Birthday Crack," "Chimney," and
"Treachery," "Lechery," "Debauchery."
Before we could climb, we hiked in down the railroad bed. It runs
along the lake and the bluffs for about a mile to a boulder field
extending upward about 100 feet to the bluff. Once up the boulder
field, everyone took turns climbing and belaying (running the safety
rope). The climbs were up fairly shear rock faces with a variety of
cracks and indentations, some so small that you had to find a way to
sneak your fingers, arm, fist, toes, and even your legs into them to
work up to heights of up to around 50 feet.
Since climbing burns up a lot of energy and water, we all snacked
though the day, drank lots of water, and ate lunch when we got
hungry. Everyone had a great time and said they were interested in
climbing again.
The hike down the boulder field was pretty exciting as we
encountered a brief rain shower when a short-lived squall moved
across the lake, causing white caps to run from one end of the lake
to the other. We ended the day by stopping for pizza at the Old
School House, a local eatery just outside the park. It was nearly
midnight as we rolled back into our own Lowell Damon Woods
neighborhood, all tired and a bit sore from a great day climbing.
