I first want to thank Richard Stollberg for again organizing a wonderful picnic and annual meeting at the Lowell Damon house on July 13. The weather was beautiful and the food was delicious. Special thanks also go to Dean Teofilo for organizing the pig roast, Jeff Enders for supplying especially good home-brewed beer and soda, and to the many other volunteers who made it all happen. If you missed the picnic this year, I hope you can attend next summer, as it is a fun time for young and old alike.
We held our annual meeting at the picnic and elected a new board of directors. Returning to the board are Bill Duyser, Richard Stollberg, Karen McNeely, Lynn Pawleski, Dean Teofilo, and Larry Kopperud. New board members include Leida Biefe, Ann Fee, Karen Roy, and Betsy Daniels. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for your commitment to our neighborhood. Board members that will be stepping down in September include Laura Buege, JoAnne Marks, Sophie Prange, and Jim Zinda. Thank you for your contributions over the past year.
One event coming up that you won’t want to miss is the annual pool party at Hoyt Park on August 11, from 6-9 p.m. The association is contributing to the rental and there is no charge for admission, so please come and experience a pleasant evening at the pool.

Several new families have been attending the play dates, adding some new friends to the group. New families are always welcome and if you are interested please feel free to attend a future playgroup meeting or email info@damonwoods.org
for more information. Future play dates and hostesses are as follows:
- August 8 - Mary Olsen

- September 5 - Laura Buege
- September 19 - Michelle Teofilo
- October 3 - JoAnne Marks

This will be the third fall the playgroup has visited Shady Acres, and every year the kids and the parents have had a great time. Details for the outings will be available in the next newsletter and at future playgroups.
NEXT BOARD MEETING

Meetings of the Neighborhood Association Council are open to the public. The next meeting is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Harwood Place, 8220 Harwood Ave. (Note the change in location; previous meetings have been in the Firefly Room at the Wauwatosa Public Library.) WAUWATOSA
FARMERS' MARKET RETURNS
|
|
On Saturday, July 20th, the first of seven Saturday farmers' markets was kicked off in the Wauwatosa City Hall and Library parking lot at 76th and North Avenue. Covenant Healthcare, in conjunction with the Wauwatosa Health Department, will present the farmers' market each Saturday through August 31st from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
According to Nancy Kreuser of the Wauwatosa Health Department, "Fresh food and healthy eating are what we promote, so we are thrilled to have the farmers' market back in Wauwatosa."
Each week, a handful of farmers will bring fresh fruits and vegetables from down on the farm to Wauwatosa for residents to buy. To encourage families and children to come to the farmers' market each Saturday, Covenant Healthcare will sponsor a morning of free entertainment and activities from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Free weekly health screenings will be offered by four Covenant facilities: St. Joseph Regional Medical Center; St. Joseph Outpatient Care and Outpatient Center Bluemound; and Covenant Medical Group Harwood Clinic - North Avenue.
The following is the schedule of events planned by Covenant Healthcare for the Farmers' Markets. All programming is from 9am until noon each Saturday from July 20th through August 31st on the west end of the City Hall and Library parking lot at 76th and North Avenue. Ample parking is available.

NEW WEB SITE DISCUSSION GROUP
The new
discussion group on our website is up and running. Give it a try to share useful information with your neighbors.
We are in a trial period to see if there is enough interest and usage to make it a permanent part of our website.
To keep in line with our association charter, the discussion group should be used for non-political purposes. A recent question was asked on the e-groups e-mail distribution list about recommending a good contractor. Using the discussion group may be a great way to share this type of information.
MEMORY WALK TEAM FORMING
Helping friends, neighbors or relatives dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease is as easy as taking a 2- or 3-mile walk on a beautiful fall day. The Memory Walk, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern Wisconsin, will be Saturday morning, Oct. 5, starting and ending at Mount Mary College. After 9:30 a.m. registration, warm-up and opening ceremonies, the Walk will begin at 11 a.m. and loop down the Menomonee River Parkway. It ends up back on campus with music, awards, massages and a hot dog cook-out.
To join the Damon Woods Memory Walk Team, please email info@damonwoods.org for a brochure/registration form. Registrations must be in by Sept. 5 in order to have our team logo on Walk t-shirts. The Walk costs $18 per person and $8 for children under 12, and the Alzheimer’s Association encourages pledges.
HELP NEEDED AT THE DAMON HOUSE GARDENS
Neighborhood volunteers are continuing to meet at the Damon House at 9 a.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month, through October, to work on the gardens surrounding the museum. Stop by and lend a hand for an hour or so. The house is at 2107 Wauwatosa Ave.
We're tentatively planning a Saturday morning project in which we hope to link the new path around the woodland gardens in the back yard with a stone path that would lead to the sidewalk along Rogers Avenue. If you'd be willing to help with that job, please
email info@damonwoods.org.
If you'd like to tour the house (Wauwatosa's oldest), stop by for a tour. The house is open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays and 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays. Admission is free, but donations to the Milwaukee County Historical Society always are appreciated.
'HIGHLAND CLASSICS' TOUR OF HOMES
Six beautiful homes reflecting the eclectic mix of the Washington Highlands will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, during the Wauwatosa Historical Society’s “Highland Classics” Tour of Homes. A walking tour of the Highlands prior to the Tour of Home is being planned.
The homes include J. Gerald and Maureen Duffy’s Tudor Revival
on Washington Circle, Chris and Denise Lindberg’s Mediterranean Revival
on Washington Circle, Leslie & Peggy Lynch’s Colonial Revival
on Two Tree Lane, John and Nancy Korom’s Arts & Crafts Bungalow
on Upper Parkway N., Jeff and Lynne Speller’s Tudor Revival on Betsy Ross Pl., and Max and Cindy Marti’s Spanish Eclectic
on Revere Ave.
Tickets are $12 in advance, or $15 the day of the tour, and can be ordered now. They’ll be available after Sept. 3 at the Kneeland-Walker House, 7406 Hillcrest Dr., and Little Red Book Inc., 7603 W. State St. For information, or to volunteer to be a docent, call the Historical Society, 774-8672.
