This year's pig roast was another great success. A big thank you to Dean
Teofilo, Richard Stollberg, Anne Fee and the other volunteers for a great job! Thank you also to the band "Three Blocks To Murdock" who really got a lot of us out there dancing.
The garden walk is also back after a few year's hiatus. As I write this it is still a week away, and we have at least eight homes participating. Thank you to those who generously opened their yards to those of us who are just getting the gardening bug, or just appreciate the beauty.
Looking forward, we are hoping to round out the neighborhood calendar by adding a Fall Harvest Event at the Damon house. By print, we hope to nail down a date, but we still haven't solidified what should all be included. If you have some great ideas, or would like to help plan (we promise, it won't take much of your time!) please
email Richard Stollberg at info@damonwoods.org.
Also, for those of you that are paid members, your directories and contractor's list will REALLY be
distributed in this month's issue. Sorry for the miscommunication! Remember, you can send in additions to the contractor's list at any time, but printed copies will be distributed once a year.
Finally, welcome to new board members Laurie Lehman and Marshall Murray. We look forward to their great input and participation in the coming year.

As of October, we will be splitting playgroup in to two, maybe even three, separate groups. (Details in the October Newsletter) If you would like to help coordinate one of the new groups, please
email info@damonwoods.org to volunteer. However, for the rest of the summer and early fall we will stay one BIG happy family and meet at the following locations:

| Aug 28 |
Laura Lynn Mac Donald |
| Sep 11 |
Hawthorn Glen Environmental Center, just north of State Street, around 60th Street (turn right after the new apartment complex). Bring some snacks and enjoy this
great Tot Lot in a beautiful setting. |
| Sep 25 |
Holly Dobson |
| Oct 2 |
Apple picking at Barthel’s in Mequon (Directions will be
provided at future playgroup or email info@damonwoods.org) |
Playgroup meets from 9:30 to 11:30 and the hostess provides light refreshments. Hope to see you soon!
If you have any questions, please email info@damonwoods.org.
CONTRACTORS LIST
The list is finally done and ready for distribution with this issue, if you are a paid member (another perk of membership). We owe
Mark Steimle, Kathleen Russell, and John Miskowski
a big thanks for volunteering their time to create this useful list. It should help you find and hire a proven contractor that you can depend on. |

BOOK
CLUB What if Japan and Germany had won WWII? What if Japan controlled the Western US, while Germany ruled the Eastern US? What if, in this version of history, someone dared to imagine what it would have been like if the Axis powers had won instead of the Allies? Would it look anything like our reality? What might a person discover on a quest to find a man rumored to live in a high castle who had written such a blasphemous book?
"The Man In The High Castle," written by Philip K. Dick in 1962, is the next book of choice for the Damon Woods Book Club. The author has also written such classics as "Blade Runner," "Total Recall," and "Minority Report." The book discussion will be held at Tom & Jeanine Schoen's home on Monday, September 15 at 7:30
pm. If you would like to attend, please email info@damonwoods.org.

NEXT BOARD
MEETING The neighborhood association's next board meeting is at 9:00 a.m. on September 13th at the Mad Mug, 80th and Burleigh.

They have lived in the Milwaukee-area for the past 14 years.

NEW NEIGHBORS ON WAUWATOSA AVE
Dean and Gladys
Miller, 38-year residents of Damon Woods, recently sold their historic home at
Wauwatosa Ave. to Bill and Ann Scallon (see photo). Bill's parents,
Bill and Sandy Scallon, have lived in the neighborhood on Stickney
Avenue since 1989. Bill Jr. reports that the Millers are living at their summer home in Pelican Lake and will be wintering at a smaller home in West Allis. Bill and Ann, who are both Wauwatosa natives, have two children,
Danny, 5 1/2, and Katie, 2 1/2. Bill grew up near 80th and Clarke, and Ann lived at 65th and Garfield and later at 95th and Wisconsin. Bill and Ann immediately jumped into neighborhood association activities by attending the annual picnic and then agreeing to open their sunken garden for the July 27 neighborhood walk.
The Scallons are believed to be the fifth owners of the house, which was recognized by the Wauwatosa Landmark Commission in 1985 when the Wauwatosa Avenue Historic District was dedicated. The house was built about 1915 by Roger Kirchoff, an architect, for his residence. It's built from poured concrete. The Landmark Commission said the house, with its stucco exterior and red tile roof, was one of the few Mediterranean residences in Wisconsin.
Bill said he was delighted to find the original 1917 blueprint plan for the sunken garden and has been getting lots of advice from relatives on its restoration.

ATTENTION LINCOLN 4K PARENTS
Join other families for lemonade and cookies on Monday, August 18, 2003 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is a great chance for you and your child to meet future classmates and their families. Laura Buege and Betsy Daniels will be hosting this event in Laura's back yard
on Jackson Park Blvd. Please R.S.V.P. to Betsy at info@damonwoods.org by August 15th if you plan on attending. Since this is an outdoor event, the rain date is Tuesday, August 19th. Hope to see you there.
MILK CAPS FOR LINCOLN
If you've bought milk lately, you've probably noticed that both Kemps and Golden Guernsey are offering $.05 per caps for schools. Lincoln School has been enrolled in both of these programs, so start saving those caps along with your
box tops for Education and Campbells soup labels. Remember that even if you don't have kids at Lincoln, your tax dollars still support the schools. Milk caps,
box tops and soup labels can be dropped off at Lincoln during the school year, or anytime at Karen McNeely's
home. If you would like to help plan and run such an event, contact Richard Stollberg at info@damonwoods.org.
HELP NEEDED TO BUILD A PATH AT THE DAMON HOUSE
Volunteers are needed on two or three upcoming Saturday mornings to help put in a flagstone path on the grounds of the Lowell Damon house Museum, 2107 Wauwatosa Ave. Dates aren't set for the project, but please contact Dave Vogel if you're able to help prepare the site, haul limestone or install the flagstone.
You can email Dave at info@damonwoods.org.
The path is part of a garden design prepared for the museum by Hawks Nursery. The flagstone we'll be using was donated by Tom and Patti Krause of Church St., Paul and Sophie Prange of Jackson Park Blvd., and Gary and Cathy Kebbekus of Forest St.
We also will be looking for volunteers to help relocate plants, especially from the north side of the museum, when work crews this summer begin shoring up the house's rotting foundation.
LOWELL DAMON'S GRANDSON VISITS HOMESTEAD
Tom Damon, grandson of our neighborhood association namesake, and his wife, Anita, visited the Damon
House museum recently, then stopped at the Milwaukee County Historical Society to do some research.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT, TUESDAY, AUGUST 5TH
Hart Park, 4-10 p.m.
Event includes: Community Information displays, hot dogs and pizza for sale (proceeds benefit Hart Park Pavilion fund), free soda and juices, flashlight walk and awesome Bartlotta fireworks.
Sign up at Little Read Bookstore (State St. and about 77th), or at the Police Department. This will very likely be the LAST large community celebration of National Night Out in Wauwatosa due to large cut backs in the police department budget. Come out and support the Police Community Support division's efforts, and celebrate Wauwatosa, too. Any questions? Call the Community Support Division at the Police Department at 471-8430.

ANNUAL PICNIC AND PIG ROAST
Another great party this year. We had a little over a hundred people (a tad less than last year, but just as much fun). Danceable entertainment was provided by Three Blocks to Murdock. Thanks especially to Anne Fee for helping to organize so many details despite last-minute hitches. Thanks again, as every year, to the Teofilos for the pig roast, to Jeff Enders for home brew, to Tom Schoen and Dave Vogel for the corn, and this year to Eleanor Heidkamp-Young for leading the children's activities. Thanks to the many other people and families who helped, including: Bill and Leslie Duyser, Jeanine and Tom Schoen, Dave and Judy Eklund, Marcy Minix, Ellie Bjorkman and Charlotte and Claire, Bret and Diane Kaiser- Rockenbach, Karen and Michael Roy. Finally, thanks again to Richard Stollberg for the four-star lavatory facility. Next year, Anne Fee will take over as picnic organizer.
