Pumpkin Farm Field Trip

Cub Scout News

Well, I finished raking my yard for the third time today, and that usually is the end of my yard work for the year. As long as we don't have another windstorm I should be able to put my rake away until spring. I have to admit that I enjoyed working outside the last few weekends as the weather was beautiful. Let's hope the warm weather continues for a few more weeks. I want to remind you of some traditional holiday activities we have planned. This year we decided to combine all of our Christmas activities into one event, which will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 1st, the Lowell Damon House. This will be the site for picking up lawn Christmas trees. In addition, we'll have an outdoor fire, hot chocolate and cider, and a cookie exchange. Alumni of the University of Wisconsin marching band will accompany caroling. Rumor has it that Santa will be visiting the Lowell Damon House. Even if you don't have a tree to pick up, please come join us for some holiday fun. I also want to announce that on December 1st the Lowell Damon Woods website will be put on the internet (www.damonwoods.org). Jim Zinda did a wonderful job putting it together. We hope you find it a useful and enjoyable way to keep up on neighborhood activities. Jim will update the site on a regular basis, so please let us know if you have ideas about additional content or links or if you run into problems. We'd like to add a few pictures to our activities page, so send us your favorite snapshots of any of last year's activities.

Happy Holidays!

Our Neighbors In Damon Woods

MOM’S NIGHT OUT
This monthly social gathering is simply a break for moms. Moms of all ages are invited to join us.

Dec. 12 - In the annual tradition, moms can get some Christmas shopping done at Mayfair Mall from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. We will gather at 8:00 at Applebee's Restaurant for a bite of food, and as usual, reveal our "Secret Santas" to those who participate. If you plan on joining us, please email info@damonwoods.org so we can get the appropriate reservation.

Jan. 16, 6:30 p.m. is the date for January's outing. Laura Buege is selecting the restaurant (not chosen yet). Email info@damonwoods.org if you want to have a relaxing meal with moms only.

NEXT BOARD MEETING
The neighborhood association’s next board meeting is at 9 a.m. on January 12th at Jitterzz. Come and have coffee and offer your ideas.

BOOK CLUB
The next book club meeting will be at 7:30 pm on January 30th. We will discuss the book, Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. This book is non-fiction and discusses the myths and stories of the wild woman archetype.

The book presents and discusses how several myths, stories and legends relate to the female psyche. Since the book is rather long, the readers are asked to read sections 2, 6, 9, 10, and 12 for the discussion. If possible, also read one additional section of your choosing to share with the group.

START YOUR HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
Saturday, Dec. 1, with your neighborhood Party. Save that date, from 2 to 4 p.m., for the launch of the Damon Woods Neighborhood Association's Christmas celebration at a party at the Damon House Museum, 2107 Wauwatosa Ave.

This is the new site for picking up lawn Christmas trees that you should have ordered by now. And the museum's new garage is the new site for our annual Christmas cookie exchange, if you've signed up ahead of time to participate.

There'll be more than trees and cookies, though. We've put a few new twists on some Damon Woods traditions as we pull together all of our holiday activities for a single two-hour party for Damon Woods families.

Join your neighbors for hot chocolate or cider while huddling around an outdoor fireplace as we sing carols, accompanied by musicians from the University of Wisconsin Alumni Marching Band. If you're baking cookies this season, please bring a plate to share.

If you've never been inside the period museum, caretaker Art Steadman has kindly agreed to conduct special tours of the home that has been around for 157 Christmases, more than any other home in Wauwatosa.

While inside, make sure you check out the third installment of the Milwaukee County Historical Society's Billie the Brownie audio cassette series. The Society has obtained new recordings of original Billie the Brownie radio programs, including one of the earliest recordings of the program that the Society has, from Dec. 21, 1946. Two other programs also are featured on the tape - the Star of Bethlehem and the December 24 Night Before Christmas program. Three stories also are on the recording: "Sleeping Beauty," "A Boy, A Dog and the Christ Child," and a recording labeled as an audition disk featuring the story "Trimming Larry's Tree."

The Society also will have copies of the 1999 and 2000 Billie the Brownie tapes available for sale with a special price for the three-volume set.

Outside, we'll be putting up a few decorations, including the official neighborhood association Christmas tree. Once our neighborhood tree is lighted, there'll be enough time to put up your own trees and still make it to the Village for its holiday celebration.

At 5:30 p.m., the Youth Choir will begin performing holiday favorites near the flagpole in front of Drew's Variety Store. Santa will be there and will hand out candy canes to children while the choir sings carols. At 6 p.m., Mayor Terry Estness will light our Village Christmas tree. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served immediately after at Baskin Robbins.

An error was made in the original signup flyer for Damon Woods Christmas events.

The flyer listed two different pickup times for our trees. The correct pickup time will be from 2-4 p.m. on December 1st at the Damon House.

ANNUAL WINTER GATHERING AND COLLECTION
for Tosa For Kids Saturday, February 23, 2001

Reserve this date for our annual membership party at the Kneeland-Walker House. A flyer will be distributed with the February newsletter for sign up of the party, as space is limited.

This is a wonderful event to have fun and spend time with your fellow Damon Woods neighbors. Besides the buffet of appetizers and all the wonderful door prizes that will be given out, we thought we would also help a charitable organization within our community called Tosa For Kids.

Tosa For Kids is a charitable organization which provides food and services for needy children, families and the elderly right here in Wauwatosa.

Our neighborhood association has volunteered to collect Easter baskets, hard candy and chocolates for the elderly, and canned food items suitable for Easter dinner (such as vegetables and fruit). Also needed are small stuffed Easter bunnies, which will be included with the Easter baskets. "Recycled" bunnies are acceptable as long as they are clean.

Mrs. Anne Fee has graciously volunteered to chair this committee to help out this needy organization. We will collect donations of any of these items at the Winter Gathering.

If anyone else is interested in helping with the Easter baskets (volunteers are needed in March to help assemble the baskets), please email info@damonwoods.org. Volunteers are always appreciated.

NEW DAMON WOODS WEB SITE
Our new web site goes online December 1st. The web site includes information about the Lowell Damon Woods Neighborhood Association, a history of the Lowell Damon house, the story of our street names, a walking tour of the neighborhood, and an online version of the latest newsletter. You'll also find information about upcoming activities and volunteer opportunities in the neighborhood. Watch for more news and special features on our site in the coming months. Our web address is http://www.damonwoods.org.

TOSA FOR KIDS
Tosa for Kids is a volunteer organization that has provided food and services for needy children and their families. Some of the neighborhood associations are looking to volunteer to spearhead a project once or twice a year (as Wauwatosa has twenty-two neighborhood associations), with the help of Judy Yauck, the head of Tosa For Kids. For example, August’s project was collecting school supplies and September’s project was gathering slightly used winter coats. The Damon Woods Association needs someone to VOLUNTEER to head this committee. If anyone is interested, please email info@damonwoods.org. If you have some things to donate (food, slightly used or new clothing, books, etc.), please contact Judy Yauck at the Wauwatosa Police Department at 471-8430 Extension 132. There is also a blue barrel marked "Tosa for Kids" in the front lobby of the Wauwatosa Police Department; donations can be left 24 hours a day.

COMMUNITY BOOK CLUB FOR KIDS
Rob from Tosa East (a student) is trying to put together a community book club for kids. This is an English project, and has been done recently in Chicago.

The idea is to get kids (middle school and high school students to all read the same book) and discuss it. Kids might see other kids reading the same book on the bus, at the library, in the park and it might start a discussion. Email info@damonwoods.org for information.

Box tops for Education & Campbell's Labels Program

Lincoln School is now enrolled in the Tyson A+ program in addition to the General Mills/Betty Crocker Box Tops for Education and the Campbell's/Pepperidge Farms Labels for education programs. Each Tyson A+ symbol is worth 24 cents so start collecting them now. Until there is a separate box set up for this program feel free to drop them off with your other box tops or labels.

Our two existing programs are currently in a dead heat, with about 1950 of each, but we have some pretty aggressive goals. For box tops our goal is about 6800 with the funds being earmarked for an art education CD program and a new flagpole for the school. The labels program goal is even more aggressive; we need 22,350 labels to get a new overhead projector, so this may not be achievable this school year. However, here are some suggestions to help us greatly increase our collections.

  1. The more people collecting, the more labels we will get, so ask your coworkers, neighbors & other family members (grandparents, aunts...) to collect, too. Offer to drop off the labels and box tops for neighbors who do not currently have children in elementary school.
  2. Look for and participate in offers for bonus coupons.

For example, in September, Campbell's had an offer in the coupon section that offered 200 labels when you sent in 20. Taking advantage of these offers can quickly increase our collection efforts.

Remember, collecting labels is an easy and free way to help Lincoln School. In addition to Lincoln School labels & box tops can be dropped off at most Lowell Damon Woods neighborhood functions. For further information or questions, email info@damonwoods.org.

Thanks,
Karen McNeely

Pumpkin Farm Field Trip

The playgroup took an annual excursion to the Shady Lane Halloween Festivities in October.

The outing was attended by more than 20 neighborhood moms, kids and guests. The children enjoyed a petting zoo, hay mazes on Little Tikes Tractors, a pumpkin patch and especially the huge model train exhibit! Thanks to all who came out for some Halloween fun!

Cub Scout News

Cub Scout Pack 474, which holds its Pack meetings at Lincoln Elementary gymnasium, recently went on a two-day camping trip to Indian Mound Reservation near Oconomowoc (Nov. 3-4). Many of Pack 474 scouts are from the neighborhood and surrounding area in Wauwatosa. Fourteen boys, ranging from first to fifth graders, took part in the camp out along with a parent.

Aside from perfect Autumn weather and plenty of outdoor activities, one of the truly unique events during the camp out was a United States flag "retirement" ceremony. A flag retirement ceremony is the only recognized way to properly dispose of old, tattered American flags. The retirement ceremonies involve bringing the old flags to a large fire, usually accompanied by patriotic music. Each flag is then carefully placed on the fire. After all of the flags have been properly disposed, the Cub Scouts then joined in the Pledge of Allegiance. The next morning, the ashes from the fire are collected and then buried in an undisclosed location so that these ashes are never disturbed.

Aside from the Boy Scouts of America, other organizations that conduct flag retirement ceremonies include VFWs, American Legions and Vietnam Veterans organizations. Old, no longer useable flags can be given to these organizations for proper retirement.

Despite the fact the these old flags are burned, the flag retirement ceremony should in no way be confused with other disrespectful treatments of our flag. On the contrary, it is a most dignified ceremony, well befitting this most important symbol of our Republic. Particularly in this time of national unity, the flag retirement ceremony taught these young boys – and renewed in their parents – the importance of the American flag in the fabric of our society, as well as a certain respect for honor and tradition.

I was glad to be a part of this event.

Mark McNeely
