Summer in Damon Woods means pig roast!! This year is no different than any other, except that it will be one week later, July 19th. For those of you new to the neighborhood, this is a wonderful tradition that you won't want to miss.
The neighborhood gatherings seem to be back in full swing. Thank you to the Teofilos for hosting another wonderful soiree. The Gehrkes have pulled together a golf outing as well as a barbecue for golfers and non-golfers alike on July 13th. If there are others who would like to have a gathering, just let a board member know and we will get it in the newsletter. Remember, the newsletter is published the first weekend of even months, so we need the info by the 15th of the month prior.
We are hoping to have a good turnout for the first garden walk in a few years. I know this will be the first one I'm attending and, as a novice gardener, I'm looking forward to getting some good ideas. If you have a garden you are proud of (it need not be grand!) it's not too late to be included, just give me a call and we will add you to the tour.
Looking forward to fall, we are considering adding a September/October harvest event. This is very much in the development stage, so if you have some ideas please share them with Richard Stollberg, who will be coordinating this event.
Thank you to Laura-Lynn MacDonald, for starting up our newcomers program.
Unfortunately, Laura-Lynn has moved. If you are interested in keeping track of new neighbors moving in and coordinating visits with our welcome basket, please let me know.
Thank you also to officers Doug Braun and Jennifer Olson who held our first Bike Rodeo. The smaller group enjoyed the more individual attention they could not receive in some of the larger rodeos.
It seems like it will be a good and busy summer, I think after this spring we deserve it!

EASTER BUNNY HELPED KIDS IN THE HUNT

The annual Easter Hunt held on April 19 was a great success. There were over 50 children who enjoyed crafts, face painting, finding eggs and, of course meeting the Easter bunny. The grown-ups had their own fun socializing with neighbors while enjoying snacks and coffee.
A big thanks to Laura Glawe and Donna Johnson for their help coordinating this event, to
Pam Christopherson for chairing it, and to the numerous neighbors and Girl Scouts that volunteered their time. We are also grateful to the following for their generous donations: Bartz's, Carol Smiles of M&M/Mars, Anodyne Roasting Co., and Elsa Lamales.
DAMON WOODS HOME
BREWERS
Several Lowell Damon Woods neighbors joined the near capacity crowd at the Bock Beer Fest held at the Muellner Building in Hart Park on April 26th. There was plenty of beer to taste and the German music by the Altekamaraden Band was a treat to polka to.
Jeff Enders held his annual 'Brew-In' on May 3 in his back yard as he prepared a batch of Texas Brown Ale which will be available for everyone to enjoy at this summer's annual picnic.
 |
| Preparing for the Neighborhood Picnic on July 19th Jeff Enders (seated) hosted our neighborhood's celebration of National Home Brewing Day (the first Saturday of May) at his home on Stickney Ave. by again brewing up a batch of ale that will be ready for the
annual neighborhood picnic at the Damon House on July 19th. |
DAMON WOODS GARDEN
WALK
See neighborhood gardens, decks and patios on Sunday, July 27. Damon Woods neighbors will be devoting a Sunday afternoon to showing off and checking out backyards. It'll be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27 (rain date is Sunday, Aug. 3).
The walk is free. And it's this simple: Start at the Lowell Damon house Museum, 2107 Wauwatosa Ave., pick up a list of the participating addresses, and off you go. While at the Damon House, you might want to tour the museum.
It's always surprising how many neighbors have lived so close to the museum for so long without ever having been inside this gem, the oldest house in Wauwatosa. It's owned by the Milwaukee County Historical Society and it regularly is open for tours on Sundays and Wednesdays. Outside the museum, take a few minutes to see the museum's gardens and find out what you might be able to do to help its restoration. Years ago, several garden clubs tended the gardens. For the past several years, a handful of volunteers from the neighborhood have been doing what they can. They'd appreciate your help.
We've had several neighbors step forward and volunteer to open their yards for inspection, but we'd like more. Don't be modest. We're looking for realistic ideas we can borrow for gardens, decks and patios in the same kind of Damon Woods yards.
If you have questions about opening your back yard to the neighborhood that Sunday, please
email info@damonwoods.org. We'd like to get this pinned down by July 15.

BOOK
CLUB
The next book discussion will be held at the home of John and Patti
Hartwick, July 21 at 7:30 p.m.
The book will be "Girl With a Pearl Earring" by Tracy Chevalier. Here's a synopsis straight from the book cover… "History and fiction merge seamlessly in Tracy Chevalier's luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Griet, the world of
Holland in the 1660s comes dazzlingly alive in this richly imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings."
If you would like to attend, please email info@damonwoods.org.
|
NEXT BOARD
MEETING The neighborhood association’s next
board meeting is at 9:00 a.m. on July 19th at the Damon Woods
Home before the picnic.

DAMON WOODS LATEST YOUTH BAND
There is a new band in the neighborhood, "Three Blocks to Murdoch." The band was formed by three Wauwatosa East High School sophomores; trumpeter Dan Duyser, saxophonist, Jon Mueller, both from the Lowell Damon neighborhood, and guitarist Lane
Kimbal.
These three good friends decided they wanted to form a band to play "ska." Ska is a kind of rock and roll with a very strong emphasis on brass. They needed a drummer, but all of their musical friends at school were already playing in bands, so they needed to find someone from outside their circle of school friends. Dan and Lane, who both work at the Wauwatosa Library, found that person, Tim
Erbes, a fellow library employee, Rufus King senior and friend. Tim quickly accepted the offer to play and in March of 2003 the band, first called "Vesper", was formed. The four set up their equipment in the basement of Dan's parent's house and began to practice twice a week. According to Mr. and Mrs. Duyser, "The sound was awesome, despite the volume." Many passersby heard them and some even
stayed to listen.
Now the boys realized they needed a bass player, knowing they again needed to find someone from the outside. This time they turned to Casio Music in New Berlin and found a flyer for a guitar player who had a friend that played bass. They called and auditioned the guitar player, Brett, and his friend the bass player, Ben, and both were asked to join the band. The volume of the band increased with the new members, and the sound was much richer.
The band still needed a singer, so the boys asked their good friend, Hunter Johnson, also a Wauwatosa East Sophomore. He accepted on a part time basis, as he, too, was in a few other bands. The final member of the band, Sam Roberson, joined in mid April. Sam, a very talented freshman at Wauwatosa East, plays the trombone and is an incredible singer. She performed in the role of Eponine in East's production of "Les Misérables."
The band's first performance was at Christ's King's "Battle of the Bands." They performed for 45 minutes, playing seven originals and four covers. They performed well, without the assistance of a sound person to help balance their sound.
The following week the band was asked to perform at Jamnesty One. This was on a Wednesday and the concert was on Friday, not much time to pull it together, but they accepted. They decided to change their name to "Three Blocks to Murdoch," after Brett's gym teacher, whose name is Murdoch and lives three blocks away from where they practice. The performance was incredible The sound had improved, as Ben's dad took on the task of being the sound guy.
The band is scheduled to perform at New Berlin West on May 30th. Walk by the Duyser's on Church Street and you may hear them practicing. It is possible they may even be outdoors, performing in the garage.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2003 FLASHLIGHT WALK
This year's National Night Out flashlight walk will be held on Tuesday, August 5, at Hart Park. The festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. and the walk is at 8:30 p.m. Fireworks and music follow the walk. Each participant receives a commemorative T-shirt and other goodies are given out along the route. The cost is $15.00 for a family of four. Registration can be done at the Wauwatosa Police Department or the Little Read Book Store on State St or you can wait until the day of the event, but shirt sizes will be limited. Further information can be obtained at 471-8430, ext. 111. Hope to see you there. BICYCLE
LICENSE REMINDER
This is your annual reminder from the Police Department to license your bicycles. Licenses are non-expiring and will not cost anything but a few moments of your time. Residents can obtain the registration forms and licenses at the Police Department, Fire Station, or Johnson's Sporting Goods. The information you will need is the serial number, make/model, color, speed, wheel size, if it's a boy's or girl's bike, your name, address and phone number. Once the police have your form, it is immediately entered into the police department's computer system. If your bike is ever lost or stolen, the license will help in locating YOU should the bike be found anywhere in the United States! The police would like to remind everyone to keep bicycles locked when not in use. The majority of bike thefts are "crimes of opportunity" (i.e., left lying on a front lawn with no one around, open garage doors, etc).
Note: Adults should license their bicycles too.

ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE, JUNE 6
Don't forget to mark your calendar so you can make the rounds at all of the great rummage sales in the All-Neighborhood Rummage Sale. It runs Friday, June 6 from 9AM to 5PM and Saturday, June 7 from 8AM to 4PM.
The sale has steadily grown with more neighbors participating each year since its inception.
Balloons will mark the homes participating, and sellers will have a reference map listing all of the sellers.
If you have any questions, please email Susan at info@damonwoods.org.
NEW NEIGHBORHOOD EVENT
The Lowell Damon Association organizes three annual events - the Easter Egg Hunt in spring, the picnic in summer, and the Holiday event in winter. What's missing? This year, we would like to inaugurate what we hope to be a fourth annual event - A Fall Harvest Fest - to round out our schedule. Here are some ideas: an evening event at the Damon House in October; a pumpkin pie bakeoff; hot, freshly-made applesauce; chestnuts roasting on an open fire; hayrides; garden produce exchange. If you would like to help plan and run such an event, contact Richard Stollberg at info@damonwoods.org.
NEWCOMERS COMMITTEE CHAIR
The MacDonalds have moved from 83rd St. due east to 73rd St. Laura was the chair of the Newcomers Committee, so we are now looking for a replacement. The committee contacts real estate agents to inform them of the Neighborhood Association, and leaves copies of our newsletter and web site home page with the agent handling a sale. When a new family moves in, the committee welcomes them and delivers a packet of information, including coupons from the Chamber of Commerce. The other committee members are Betsy Daniels, Anne Fee, and Holly Dobson. If you are interested, contact Richard Stollberg at
info@damonwoods.org.
TOIL IN THE SOIL AT THE DAMON WOODS HOME
You're all thumbs and none of them are green?
Join the club! The same can be said for the small core group of neighborhood volunteers who've been wrestling with the gardens at the Lowell Damon House Museum.
Dumb thumbs aren't stopping them and shouldn't stop you from volunteering this summer as neighbors toil in the soil for an hour or two, starting at 9 a.m., on the first and third Saturdays of each month through October.
The Heritage Garden Club of Wauwatosa recently donated $200 to our Damon House garden project, as it has for the past several years. This generous and much appreciated donation, combined with additional financial support from the neighborhood association,
should allow us to continue making some headway this summer. But we've got a long way to go since we've got bigger ideas than our limited time and manpower allows. Your help will make a visible difference.
DEAR NEIGHBORS:
I recently learned of a fun and easy way to raise funds to support Share Our Strength in its efforts to end childhood hunger in America. I am holding a Great American Bake Sale as part of this program, and could really use your support!
Here are some facts about childhood hunger:
 |
Thirteen million children in America are hungry or are at risk of hunger. |
 |
Every fourth person standing in a soup kitchen line is a child. |
 |
Hungry children are more likely to get sick and be absent from school. |
 |
Hunger impairs a child's ability to learn in school. |
 |
Childhood poverty is more widespread in the United States than in any other industrialized country. |
 |
If we make it a priority we can end childhood hunger in America. |
How you can help:
 |
Provide baked goods for the sale (email
Meg at info@damonwoods.org). |
 |
Whether it's for breakfast, a mid-morning snack, or coffee with a neighbor,
come to the bake sale! (Coffee and other beverages will also be available). |
 |
Spread the word to your friends and family to help make this event a success! |
Details:
Date: Saturday, June 21st
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Location: Meg and DJ Lee's house.
And what's an event without a theme, you say?? Well, our bake sale will have a French Cafe theme, fully equipped with French music, croissants, and even a silent auction of French wine.
Your contribution will fund direct service organizations across the nation and in our own community. The millions of children who go to bed hungry would appreciate your support.
Thank you.
